Joy is meant to be at the heart of our discipleship. Church should be a place where we feel spiritually renewed, loved, and uplifted—a place where joy is not only welcome but expected. When we choose to be joyful at church, we strengthen our own faith and help others feel the Savior’s love more deeply.

Elder Patrick Kearon reminded us of this powerful truth when he declared:

“Welcome to the Church of Jesus Christ, the Church of hope, the Church of healing, the Church of joy.”
(Welcome to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, April 2024 General Conference)

Joy is a spiritual gift that invites light into our lives and into our wards. A joyful heart doesn’t mean life is free from trials—it means we trust in Jesus Christ enough to find peace and purpose within those trials.

How Can We Express More Joy at Church?

  • Smile and greet others sincerely, especially newcomers or those who sit alone.

  • Sing hymns with enthusiasm, letting the lyrics uplift your spirit.

  • Participate positively in class discussions with encouraging comments and faith-filled testimonies.

  • Express gratitude—in prayer, conversation, and service.

  • Come prepared, spiritually and emotionally, to receive and share revelation.

Joy is contagious. When we express joy in our worship, we help others feel welcome, loved, and hopeful. In Relief Society, a joyful teacher can set the tone for meaningful, Spirit-led discussions that strengthen hearts and testimonies.
